Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Curriculum
- Develop, plan, and implement engaging and effective lesson plans that align with the school’s curriculum standards for music theory, history, and appreciation.
- Instruct students in instrumental and/or vocal techniques, music notation, rhythm, harmony, and sight-reading.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of all students, from general music classes to advanced ensembles.
- Maintain a positive, creative, and supportive learning environment in the music classroom.
Performance and Extracurricular
- Direct and rehearse school musical ensembles, such as the choir, band, orchestra, or other groups.
- Organize, coordinate, and lead student performances, concerts, recitals, and musical events both during and outside of school hours.
- Prepare students for music examinations, auditions, and competitions as appropriate.
- Encourage student participation in extracurricular music clubs and activities.
Assessment and Administration
- Assess and evaluate students’ musical growth and progress through various methods (e.g., performance evaluations, written tests, practical assignments).
- Provide constructive feedback to students and communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and performance.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress reports.
- Manage and maintain the inventory of school-owned musical instruments, equipment, and resources.
Collaboration and Professionalism
- Collaborate with other teachers and staff to integrate music into cross-curricular activities and support whole-school initiatives.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, departmental meetings, and professional development workshops.
- Adhere to all school policies and procedures, including those related to student safety and conduct.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Education and Certification
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Music Education, Music, or a related field.
- State-specific teaching certification or license in Music Education (where required).
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and diverse musical genres.
- Proficiency in at least one primary instrument (e.g., piano, guitar, or voice) and familiarity with others.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Effective classroom and behavior management skills.
- Ability to inspire, motivate, and guide students of various ages and skill levels.
- Competency in using music-related technology and software.
Experience
- Previous experience teaching music in a school or educational setting (preferred, but sometimes entry-level is accepted).
- Experience directing student musical ensembles and coordinating performances.
